Choosing a Podcasting Plan

The first time you access the Podcasting tool in SiteControl, you will need to choose a podcasting plan that meets your needs.

To choose a podcasting plan:

1

(If you haven't already, log in to SiteControl, click on the Website Tools button, and click on the Podcasting button.)

2

On the Podcasting screen, click on the Choose your Podcasting plan link.

3

The plan selection screen appears, and allows you to choose from a variety of options.

4

Click the radio button next to the amount of disk space and traffic that you want. (The free option will be enough to get you started, and you can always come back and add more space).

Disk space: This will be the amount of disk space that your podcasts will take up. The amount of space you need will depend on how you prepare your audio files, and how long they are.

Traffic: This would be the amount of times your file is accessed in a given month. For example, if you had an mp3 file that was 10 megabytes, and it was accessed 100 times, that would be:

10 megabytes x 100 = 1000 megabytes = 1 gigabyte (GB)

- In this situation, your monthly traffic would be 1 gigabyte. This is for one file. So the amount of traffic you'd need would depend on the file size and how many times it was accessed. In a later topic, we will see how you can

5

Enter an email address that you would like to serve as a login to manage your podcast. It can be any email address; no email actually goes to the address, it is simply a login.

Choose a password and enter it in the Choose a password and Verify password fields.

We recommend that you consider keeping your login information in a safe place. There are situations where you may need to log back in. However, if you lose your information can log in to SiteControl, click Website Tools, click the Podcasting link, and launch the Podcasting Control Panel. You can also change your password. (see Changing Your Password)

6

Enter a name for your podcast feeds. This name will appear in the URL for your syndication feeds.

This name can only contain characters that are valid for domain names. Please do not include any spaces, underscores, colons, commas, etc. in the name.

For example, if you entered "podcasting" in this field, then when you create a feed, the address for your podcast would look something like this: http://podcasting.yourdomain.com/xml.php?feed_id=13  (the exact URL is generated when you create a feed.)

The address you create here also serves as a way for you to log in directly to the Podcast Control Panel. (You can always access the Podcast Control Panel through SiteControl, but if you prefer, you can also access it directly.) This may be useful if you want to grant access to someone for managing podcast feeds but you don't necessarily want to grant full access to SiteControl. Ex: If you entered "podcast" as a name in this step, then you could log in to the Podcast Control Panel at podcast.yourdomain.com

7

Click the Continue button. A confirmation screen appears.

8

Click the Continue button on the confirmation screen.

9

The Podcasting plan screen appears. This is the screen that will display after the first time you have accessed the Podcasting tool. It allows you to change your podcasting plan, and to launch the podcasting control panel.

Now that you have selected a plan, you are ready to access the Podcasting Control Panel.
